In 2010 FoK initiated a long-term brook trout stocking program with the hope of re-establishing a native population of brookies in the upper reaches of the Kayaderosseras Creek. There the water is cooler, cleaner, faster, and more conducive to year-round survival and reproduction of this native breed. Each year in April and November, with the help of Avery’s Fish Hatchery, we release hundreds of healthy adult fish, mostly for the enjoyment of sport fishing, but also in hopes that some of them will survive and reproduce the following year.
The April event ends with the Family Fun Fish Stocking at Kelley Park in Ballston Spa, open to the public. Bring your own bucket, and each kid gets their very own trout to carry to the stream and release. The event is dependent on water conditions, so watch for the date.
